Gays in the Military

September 20th, 2011

So, I have this friend that I went to college with (I guess I’ll consider him a friend, for now). He is a right-wing Bible thumper. This friend always puts conservative talking points as his status update on Facebook. And without fail, I usually take the bait and give him a moderate/liberal view. It always ends up with him coming back to some scripture in the Bible that proves that I’m stupid and Godless. We had a healthy debate just earlier today (9/20/11) about how homosexuals are all adulterers and that the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is going to cause straight people in the military to commit adultery because the gays can. Here is a screen shot of the argument:

Well, I was really hoping the screenshot would allow you to read it, but alas. I’ll copy and paste it for you:

Can someone objectively explain to me how we can repeal DADT but still have a policy against adultery? Last I checked, any sex outside of marriage was adultery. Not being political here, just wondering if this repeal will lead to the military telling married men, “Well, do whatever you want now too!” Feel free to share your thoughts, as I’m sure some of you will.

    • Kris And just in case you might be thinking, “Kris, we can’t use the Bible as a basis for laws,” ask yourself, “Where did the military get the idea that adultery shouldn’t be allowed?”

    • Spencer HicksDoes that fact that adultery isn’t allowed stop anyone from committing it? If gay people want to serve and serve openly, let ‘em. It’s not going to change anything in my world. Plus, Jesus still loves them.

Dustin, my point is this: the military and its Commander-in-Chief need to decide what their source of law is. If it’s the Bible, then they can’t allow homosexual behavior and allow straight men to cheat on their wives and still serve. If it’s not the Bible, then what is the point of keeping the adultery code if gays can now serve and do whatever they please? Spencer, I’m not asking if that law is effective, I’m asking if it’s fair based on the arguments put forth by your party.

    • Kris And yes, Spencer, Jesus does love them. That’s not my point. I’m asking once again OBJECTIVELY how do you reason out the repeal of DADT and still justify an adultery code?

    • Kris And Dustin, yes the new bill allows gays to serve and do as they please, but apparently straights who cheat on their spouses or singles who have sex with married people while serving are not allowed to serve. I’m suggesting that if they are going to use the Bible and/or other moral sources for one thing, they should use it for all.

    • Spencer HicksI think it’s a law that’s not enforced like DADT was. I think the military has bigger problems to solve than finding people that have cheated on their spouses and kicking them out. And seriously, if the military is going to be lenient of criminal records to allow more people to join, then infidelity isn’t a top priority.

    • Spencer HicksAlso, if the military or society is going to use the Bible as it’s base for laws, then we are missing a shit-ton of laws from Leviticus.

    • Spencer Hicks‎*its, not “it’s”.

    • Kris I don’t think we should use the Bible as a basis for law, but clearly the law we have was based off the Ten Commandments. I just wonder where discrimination will fit in for the straight men and women in the military.

    • Spencer HicksSorry I’m filling up your thread. I just finished reading “Love Wins” by Rob Bell and it has made me feel better about Christianity. I would recommend it. Wasting time worrying about gays in the military isn’t how was should be creating heaven on earth when there are so many bigger problems out there.

    • Kris But I guess it’s our turn, huh?

    • Kris Seriously? I read it in like 2 hours. Sorry to hear you would recommend it. I’m not worrying about gays in military, I’m simply asking for an OBJECTIVE explanation.

DADT was put in place by “my party” as you said, because “your party” wouldn’t allow homosexuals to serve. You asked for an “objective” explanation, but frame the question in a way that doesn’t allow for objectivity based on the fact that you claim all gay people are “adulterers”. If that is what you believe then there is no objective answer. So it’s a stretch to say that just because the military is no longer criminalizing homosexuals, that straight people will start committing adultery just b/c “the gays can.”

    • Kris Shiplet No time to go into it. I’ll send you a short review tomorrow :) off to work.
So, apparently with the repeal of DADT, straight people can now do whatever the hell we want. Which I’m pretty sure is has been happening since the beginning of time anyway.
Just wanted to share this exchange and let you know if we want equality for everyone, these are the kinds of people that are standing in our way. Also, let’s not forget that the military’s job is to break the ten commandments. Shit, America spends a lot of money to find new ways to murder people.
Kisses,
Spence

Makin’ Movies!

August 2nd, 2011

So, I got a bit part in a movie starring Chris Kattan recently. I realize that sounds pretentious, and believe me when I say I’m not one of those d-bags that loves the craft of acting. I know nothing about it and it shows in the limited amount of work I’ve done in front of the camera. My acting experience dates back to  making funny short sketches with my friends.

At this years DeadCenter Film Festival, a short that was directed by my friend Joe Cappa was accepted into the Comedy Shorts category. I’m proud of this because when I went to the screening it got the best reaction from the crowd. The other “comedy” shorts were done by real film makers and were focused more on the craft and cinematography than the jokes. Our film was the opposite. It was me and talented super-actor Matt Brown (an amazing person that is a better actor than anyone in Hollywood today. It blows my mind that he is not a millionaire. He is very good. And he has a real movie which he wrote and stars called, Rainbow around the Sun, check it out). Aside from being very talented, Matt is wickedly funny and played my opposite in this short. Joe Cappa took care of making it look good, while Matt and I made it funny. I’m proud of this little piece, which if you want to, you can watch here.

Later this year I was asked to play an asshole comedian in Roark Comptons: The Motion Picture. It was written and shot by the fine gentleman from Single Tree Productions. Who are now spread out across the country. I’m excited for them to break into the industry so I don’t have to do shit. I’m just going to ride their coat-tails! Anywho, this film is going to be screening at the 51st Street Speakeasy the first Thursday in September, 2011 and I’m excited to see how it turned out.

Now, about the Chris Kattan joint; my friend Lance McDaniel co-wrote and directed this movie which is called, “Just Crazy Enough”. It’s a family friendly comedy and I had the honor of playing “Laundry Truck Driver”. I was given one line and two great sight gags. It was amazing seeing how real movies are made (by “real” I mean a movie with a budget, paid actors, crew… tons of professionals). I made lots of new friends and Lance was amazing at juggling all the tasks he had to deal with as the director. I’m very excited for this movie to come out. While I’m not going to pack my bags and move to Hollywood, I will happily act in anything you have around the OKC metro area.

Here is a picture of my friend Greg Elwell. Carri and I had dinner with him and his lovely wife last night. They are great people and Greg is one of the funniest people I know. It both saddens me and elates me that he is not a stand-up comic (I’m sad because he is hilarious, elates me because I don’t need the competition). Also, I apologize that it is sideways, I’m not very good with WordPress.

I’m going to try to update my blog on a regular basis, I know I’ve neglected it for some time. Anywho, if you like jokes in 140 characters or less, you can follow me on Twitter. I post pretty often there (but most of the jokes are dirty, so be warned). I love you all.

It’s a living!

So, I made a new friend through Twitter. Dave Rhea was a professional musician before settling in Oklahoma. He was awesome enough to put this video together. Follow him on Twitter @jdaverhea!

The Power of Twitter!

May 17th, 2011

If you follow me on Twitter (@SpencerLenox) or Facebook you know that I’m super excited about having super funny comedian, Rob Delaney come to town. Super.

Rob tweeted that he had two dates open and that he was looking to book them, I tweeted at him (if anyone had said this phrase 10 years ago I would have assumed they were retarded) that he should come to Oklahoma. And to my surprise, Rob tweeted me back!

This is why I’m falling in love with Twitter (Facebook, you were good to me, but I think we’ve grown apart). Twitter is mostly one sided, you just toss your inane thoughts out there and let the interwebs gobble them up. But at times, it can be this amazing thing where it brings two people together that would have had no other way of contacting each other. Perhaps that last sentence seemed a little creepy, but not to worry, I’m not going to use my Damien-esque powers to make a nanny hang herself at my birthday party.

I followed Rob on Twitter for quite awhile, just enjoying his brand of comedy. I never would have expected him to want to come to Oklahoma. His show will be at The Greens Country Club, just off the Kilpatrick Turnpike, June 4th at 8pm. I’m hoping that this show is successful. Oklahoma has been very supportive of the local comedy scene and I fully expect this show to continue that momentum.

I realize you’re probably thinking, “Comedy at a country club?” Yes, I can read your mind. And yes, comedy at a country club! The amazing David Box and Jim Cowan of the Greens are two guys that want to set The Greens apart from your stuffy, upper-crust, boring country club. And you wanna know what, this is a great way to shake that stereotype.

The tickets will go on sale May 17th, 2011 (later today) and will be $15 bucks. A fair price if you ask me, considering we are bringing Rob in from California. So please, continue to support the local arts by coming to this show. As a bonus, you’ll get to see me perform (no extra charge!).

I love all of you.

MOWING SHOES!

September 22nd, 2010

So my buddy and talented film maker, Joe Cappa, and I shot a short. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjAbAuYbfTY

The idea came from one of the jokes I use on-stage. I used OKC’s best actor, Matthew Brown, to play “Jeff”. I think it turned out really well.

Joe Cappa did a great job.
